While I have always had a fascination with memory, I became more interested as a result of an episode of amnesia in the fall of 2013. My latest work was inspired by this experience. My random and sudden loss of memory was unsettling on every level. A variety of explanations were offered, but given the nature of my situation, none was definitive. And this is precisely what is so curious about memory.
My art allowed me to explore what is remembered and what is forgotten, and why. What is kept secret? When do memories become burdens? When there is no memory, why is there is a feeling of frustration instead of freedom? Where is the truth in a memory?
The assemblages are containers for aspects of memory. Text is minimal, allowing the forms and images to speak for themselves. Hand and machine stitching become a metaphor for making sense of memories. Layers of paper and wax both reveal and hide.
